Butches In The Wild
The title made you look, didn’t it? Yeah, I get it. I’ve asked you here to enjoy this experience - a celebration of butch women.
When I was growing up, the word “butch” was a derogatory term for a woman who dressed masculine of center. They were rough and tough - like grown-up tomboys - and I thought they were amazing. So tough and strong, yet feeling and feminine at the same time. My elementary school P.E. teacher… the girl’s basketball coach…that one girl with a shaved head who always wore Doc Martens in high school - they all seemed to have so much…CONFIDENCE! But “Butch” was not a nice thing to say.
Imagine my surprise when the millennium rolls around and my “tomboy” girlfriends are taking Butch back! BOOM! Power regained!
As a Fort Lauderdale Boudoir photographer, I was floored when my friends couldn’t find inspirational images for their boudoir shoot - no intimate portraits of plus sized, masculine of center women were to be found. We decided to make our own inspirational images and from that the Butch Boudoir Project was born. A movement born of necessity to fill the artistic void with images of women that fit this look.
This particular shoot is Project 2. Its an absolute celebration of the myriad of ways masculine of center women express themselves through image and styling. What a better way to get a glimpse than to follow my friends to a barber shop for some fun and a game of pool.
It is my distinct pleasure to present these images and I hope women who identify like my friends, find pleasure in seeing themselves represented in this landscape.
